In case you've been hiding under a rock for the last 24 hours, I'll explain what went on at theoutnet.com's insane £1 sale today. The RSVP only, £1 sale landed in my e-mail inbox at 7:23 this morning declaring the party had officially started. The Outnet were celebrating their 1st birthday with a one item per person give away, with pieces from Miu Miu, Matthew Williamson, Aquascutum and Burberry up for grabs.
I attempted to enter the sale, more out of curiosity then the desire to purchase, at around 9:00. To my frustration, there was an overload in activity and the server was down, which continued until I finally got into the sale at around 10:00, only to be met with the following screen:Many people trying to access the sale were left wasting hours of their time, to no avail. I'm not sure if more people were pleased or upset thanks to the sale, but as they put it themselves on twitter, you have to "win" the chance to even purchase one of the £1 pieces.
It is of course an excellent concept for a sale, and one that no doubt draws a crowd - the Outnet sold record amounts in America, and I'm guessing their UK sales were gigantic too. If they do repeat the £1 sale next year, lets hope their server can handle it. Who managed to snag a bargain? and who was put off the whole thing? Some people have been threatening to never shop at either theoutnet.com or net-a-porter.com again, but I think they'll change their mind when they see what the net-a-porter sale has in store for them!
