Let's admit it. Among the onslaught of trends taken straight out of your grandparents' closet, the least likely to be a staple in your summer wardrobe would be crochet. However, this classic woven dating back to the days of Cabbage Patch dolls and doilies has been redone, thanks to the likes of Chanel, Mark Fast and others. Down the runways have come refreshingly chic and awe-inspired looks, allowing for crochet to become an airy alternative to the classic cotton summer basic.
Chanel’s spring 2010 show incorporated a myriad of crochet-based looks, all with a twist. Romantic detailing paired with current silhouettes made for an ethereal feel yet somewhat prairie-like with an edge. Mark Fast showed the flashier side to crochet, through his use of bright colors and risqué cut-outs (not to mention the pleasantly surprising use of “plus-size” models.) Fast’s sleek dresses which hugged the body at every curve, took crochet to an unexpectedly seductive level.
This trend has not only made its way onto the runway, but onto the celebrity-laden streets as well. Whether it is a simple vest to a pull-over, dress or skirt, celebrities such as Rachel Bilson, Kate Bosworth and others all have rocked the current trend, along with flouncy skirts, caged heels and ballet-buns.
And if crochet isn’t your cup of tea, you may begin to reconsider. Fall 2010 lines by the likes of Rachael Cassar and Korto Momolu are already featuring the knit through heavy cover-ups and alluring night- inspired street wear. So break out your knitting needles and schedule another romp through of grandma’s closet. Crochet is here to stay.
