Marc Jacobs to Produce Plus-size Clothing

Designers have been getting plus-sized friendly recently - first it was the increased usage of plus-sized models on the runway, then at the start of this month, it was announced that Saks will now be selling some clothes in a bigger range of sizes - meaning that labels such as Chanel will be available in a whole new section devoted to plus-sizes.

Marc Jacobs has taken this a step further, and will produce up to size 14 clothing, a first in high-fashion history. The news was announced by Marc Jacobs’ president Robert Duffy via Twitter:

'Listen, we’re in the very beginning stages of talking to a partner about plus sizes.’

Duffy also says that nothing has been made official yet, and that it will be at least a year before the sizes are available to buy. He stated:

‘Want to do plus sixes. Great opportunity. Need to get the customers interested.  They don’t buy our 14 and 16’s.  I always get stuck with them.Interest in Plus sizes? Women are dying for fashion.  Need to get the message out.  But when we put 14 and 16 in the stores no takers.  Stopped.’

Duffy also insisted that he didn't want to use the term plus-size, but just wishes to make larger clothing sizes available for more curvaceous women.

This push for larger sized clothing is a fashion first, at least within the realm of high-fashion - it will be interesting to see if it will take off with other well known fashion houses, and if Marc Jacobs will go down in history for starting a mini plus-sized revolution.
