LFW: Mary Katrantzou Spring/Summer 2011

While other young designers may struggled to find their path at the beginning of their career, Mary Katrantzou has kept a level head and has simply refined exactly what it is that makes her designs stand apart. This season delighted, with floral print hoops skirts, an array of sculptural, digital printed dresses and metal bib necklaces. Katrantzou has been known for her use of digital prints, and this collection was practically constructed solely from graphic, digitalized prints, often printed out on delicate fabrics.

The construction of each outfit was a marvel too. Most dresses were above knee length, some with powerful shoulders, others with hoop skirts that branched out playfully, while a few dresses featured a long netting attachment, draped down each side. Katrantzou is a designer with great force and imagination. It takes guts not to become too worried by trends or commercial appeal, but there is a feeling of true artistic spirit in these designs, a factor which can only be felt from the true masters of their craft.
