Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2011

It was another case of mouth-watering clothes made for beach-side wear and chilled out summer parties over at the Marc by Marc Jacobs show, a more dresser version of which we saw at his mainline collection this season. This might have been more casual, but the citrus punch flavours made a splash on the runway.

With laidback, slouchy structures, casual sun dresses, shorts and shirts combos, hotpants and floaty skirts paraded down the runway, there was a mix of styles and a flirtation with masculine tailoring (both for the men and women). The designs were clearly retro inspired, with bowl style straw hats, high-waisted shorts, 50’s style skirts and shirts, and super feminine full-skirted dresses.

It was the acid bright fruity colours which elevated this collection’s appeal - the orange red lipstick painted onto each models lips was far from the only colour featured in this show: bright sunny yellow, sky blue, green, tobacco and orange were mixed in with lighter shades such as beige and mink for a desert vs. lush tropics vibe.

This was, as per usual, a standard Marc by Marc Jacobs show: each piece was made to walk off the catwalk and directly into a poolside party, only to instantly be the envy of every other attendee. The looks were feminine, fun and Summery, as well as picking up on a cool-as-a-cucumber downtown-girl retro feel.
