Beth Ditto Walks for Jean Paul Gaultier

Singer Beth Ditto turned model for Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring/Summer 2011 show. Beth, who is singer in the band The Gossip is a UK size 28. She graced the catwalk wearing two separate looks: the first a floral silk mini-dress with what appeared to be yards of silk 'bandages' attached. Her second look featured a skimpy lace corset teamed with hotpants, fish-net tights and black heels.

Beth has been praised for being an icon to fuller-figured women especially throughout Europe, with her boundless confidence and risqué fashion choices. She has even designed a range of clothing for high-street store Evans, who specialize in catering for women sized 14 - 32 UK. The Media have had mixed reactions to Beth's appearance on the runway: is this a publicity stunt? Is Jean-Paul using her to get media coverage? or is it a great way to reach out to larger women and help them embrace fashion?

Beth has addressed the issue of being overweight, but still enjoying fashion before, stating in an interview:

"I don't understand all these women who say they feel betrayed by fashion. A piece of clothing can't talk — it can't tell you that you can't have it — so really, you're just telling yourself that, you make yourself the victim, because if you want clothes that bad, then make them yourself. You have to get creative if you're fat. I'm really good at turning a belt into a necklace, and I can always find a nice pair of earrings."

British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman said about Beth's appearance on the runway:

"Instead of a fuss being made about a few cause célèbre exceptions on the catwalk, what I'd really like instead is for most models to be a [UK] size 10 rather than a size 8."
