Vintage Vogue Covers: 1931 - 1944

At the beginning of the 1940's, we slowly saw fashion photography begin to emerge on the cover of Vogue, although it was yet to replace artistically illustrated covers completely. One cover pays homage to the war with planes hovering overhead proclaiming the arrival of Spring Fashion, and the 40's also saw the arrival of the first fashion models, such as Lisa Fonssagrives, who graced the cover in 1940, gracefully diving in a pair of striped hotpants, a svelte blue halterneck and matching dancing shoes, ushering in a monumental sartorial moment in fashion history.
