Behind the Lens: Mert & Marcus

Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, often known simply as Mert & Marcus, are one of the most famous fashion photography duos in the world. The two have been heavily influenced by the work of photographer Guy Bourdin, and over the past decade have single handedly revolutionised the way digital images are manipulated.

Mert, who originally hails from Turkey, and Marcus, born in Wales, met for this first time in 1994, and although working in different areas, decided to work together as a team, with Marcus working as assistant photographer, and Mert taking on the role of fashion photo modeler.

The duo got their first big break when they showed some of their images to Dazed & Confused magazine, who quickly gave them a cover. This was undoubtedly a pivotal moment, propelling the two in to a career together which was instantly successful.

Their photographs often show strong, sophisticated women, with powerful silhouettes and highly contrasting colours. The two are known for having a sense of perfection about their work, Mert once stating: "The difference between us and other photographers is that we care a lot about appearance, we spend most of the time in the make-up and hairstyling rooms.”

These days, the duo are often called upon by the likes of Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Givenchy to shoot their campaigns, while their work has also graced the pages of fashion magazines such as Vogue Italia, W Magazine, Pop Magazine and Vogue Paris.

The two regularly hone in a particular muse, who they photograph regularly - the two have captured models such as Lara Stone, Natalia Vodianova and Edita Vilkeviciute on countless occasions. The pair have also photographed some of the world’s most famous stars, including Madonna and Victoria Beckham.

Below is a brief look at some of their work - these are just a few select images of their vast, inspiring collection of photographs that the two have worked on.
