Spring Trend: The Return Of The Platform

Platform shoes - the very mention conjures up images of Elton John sitting at a rainbow-coloured piano circa the 70’s, or Emma ‘Baby Spice’ Bunton in the midst of the Spice Girls movement - but come Spring/Summer 2011 this year, instead you should be looking to the likes of Chanel and Marc Jacobs for your platform inspiration - phew.

Designers have been dipping in to fashion’s less fashionable past and have opted to chose the platform as a do-over. At Chanel, as with many of the other designs available, it doesn’t require the help of a mini-starcase to slip these beauties on - they were mostly mid-height. Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld give the shoe an elegant makeover with supple leather straps, transforming the footwear in to a key summer essential, much like he did for the clog just a few seasons ago.

Other designers followed suit, including Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam - both opting for sophisticated strappy sandal versions of the platform, making it much easier to wear with a pair of tailored trousers or a smartly cut skirt taken from either collection.

Prada took a different approach to the mid-height platform trend, opting for a brogue style look complete with laces in black patent leather, and finished the design with a colour stripe - the two pairs seem on the catwalk were finished off with a grassy green stripe and a vivid dark blue.

The platform is officially back - but thankfully you don’t need a glittery suit to look the part. Teaming a simple pair with a minimal nude ensemble will give a simple look an on-trend kick, or for those who dare to do more, colourful tropical-inspired stripes and neon accessories a la Prada.
