Trend: Tough Luxe

Tough Luxe: the idea seems perhaps contradictory, but it's a trend that continues to pop up season after season, and this season it made an impact, showing up on catwalks as diverse as Chanel, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen. While Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy's creative director, has always put a slightly gothic twist on his take for the luxurious label, it was surprising to see Karl Largerfeld give the models at Chanel a dominatrix inspired twist, with long thigh-grazing chaps and eyeliner to rival the likes of Taylor Momsen.

Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton also put forward a toughened up idea of luxuriousness, opting for a lacy embellished suit teamed with studded boots and a speckled sheer under-layer. Elsewhere, Christophe Decarnin the designer at Balmain, took the idea of tough luxe and ran with it - studded leather jackets, towering heels and le piece de resistance, cut-out t-shirts completely littered with attached safety pins.

This trend has not only been seen on the catwalk, it's been adapted by some street savvy dressers, spotted in Vogue and is painless to get a the look: simply add some studded leather, some charcoal eyeliner or for the truly daring, make like the Givenchy models and don a black bowl cut.
