There are plenty of clothes that you can find on the high street that take inspiration from designer pieces (some more than others), but this example seems to go a little too close to the designer's original vision to make it less 'inspired by' and more 'ripped off from'. Primark (and Penneys in Ireland) have recently released the below stripe sun dress which retails for £11 or €17. The dress looks startlingly similar to a design which Marc Jacobs designed for his Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2011 collection - both feature bright stripes in varying sizes, similar colours and the dress itself is a similar shape. Even weirder, Primark even tried to make the promotional image look similar to that of the Marc by Marc Jacobs campaign, placing the model in front of a dilapidated looking building. It all seems a bit deceptive.
High street stores such as Primark can get away with doing designer copies such as this one by changing just a few minute details - the size of the stripes perhaps, or a slight colour change - and legally, they're doing nothing wrong, but is it really right to steal such an obvious idea? Check out the two images below and decide for yourself - would you buy the Primark dress?
