The Autumn/Winter 2011 collections were embracing one of the most rudimentary patterns this season: the classic polka dot. As per usual, Marc Jacobs led the pack with his mainline Marc Jacobs collection - small black dots were placed on white retro-inspired jackets, skirts and tops, as well as coordinating small spotty pillbox hats which rested on many of the models heads. Polka dots were also seen in Paris at Yves Saint Laurent, where Stefano Pilati speckled a patent black streamline raincoat with small white spots.
Stella McCartney and Gucci both took a delicate approach to the trend, utilizing polka dots and spots on sheer fabric. Stella McCartney placed black disc-like cut-outs strategically all over a sheer dress, while Gucci's offering was similar, with a sheer black dress which featured white small polka dots. Diane von Furstenberg's take on the trend was one of the most unique - she cut out large circles all over a long black maxi-dress and placed black mesh behind each hole, making for an interesting 3d effect that wasn't without her usual blend of feminine sophistication.
Polka dots will be everywhere this coming season - thankfully this is one trend that is really simple - just add a spotted accessory for a subtle take on the look, or keep your eyes peeled for a sheer polka dot printed dress to channel Gucci's retro seductresses.
