16-year-old American model Hailey Clauson is no stranger to controversy - she first walked down the runway aged 15, causing Diane Von Furstenberg to publicly apologize for using the model - and now she is in the spotlight again. Hailey's parents have filed a lawsuit against Urban Outfitters after the company used a photo of Hailey on a t-shirt. Her parents believe the photo in question is “sexually suggestive” and that it appeals to "the likes of paedophiles". The photo was captured by Jason Lee Parry and sees Hailey posing with her legs open, facing towards the camera. The lawsuit, which was filed in Manhattan reads as follows:
‘She is posed in a blatantly salacious manner with her legs spread, without a bra, revealing portions of her breasts. The image of Teen in a spread eagle position making her crotch area the focal point of the image may portray a child in a sexually suggestive manner and may be in violation of one or more federal and/or state laws.’
The lawsuit accuses the photographer for making ‘her crotch area the focal point of the image’, and it continues to say that the photo appears to show ‘what some observers believe to be pubic hair.’ The document also states that Hailey is forced ‘to be the object of prurient interests and provides wallpaper for the likes of paedophiles’.
At first glance, Hailey's parents seem to be protecting her, but when you look through some of her other work, which is arguably just as sexually suggestive, it quickly becomes possible that they have other motives. Her parents are seeking $28 million in damages - do you think they should be awarded the money? Comment below.
