As a gold curtain swept to one side, revealing the whole cast of models reclining and posing on wooden chairs, the Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2012 show got underway. One of the last few designers to continue to use theatrics to kick off his shows in style, the opening was unique and original. One by one, models took to the catwalk, with rags tied in their hair and wearing an unusual mixture of textures and fabrics - a plasticy wrap came first, sheer and clingy, and worn with an array of designs including gingham shirts, vests and t-shirts. Another plastic-looking material was turned into abundant fringe and added to the helms of dresses, while elsewhere whole outfits were constructed from the material - one icy blue flapper style dress stood out.
With loose retro silhouettes mixed in with the fringe body-hugging designs, and a mouth-watering colour selection (from a light seafoam shade to citrus orange), Jacobs went in a whole new direct for Spring/Summer 2012, artfully manipulating skirts to look bunched up, as well as toying with new space-age material that brought something new to the table. As we all wait to see if Dior will net Jacobs, he continues to prove that his imagination is limitless.
