NYFW: Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011

Vincent van Gogh was the main source of inspiration for the Mulleavy sisters who are behind New York based label Rodarte. For Spring/Summer 2011, the sister design duo took several of van Gogh's most famous paintings ('Sunflowers' and 'Starry Night' are instantly recognisable among others) and translated the mood and colours of each painting into a series of dresses that they crafted in their usual manner, with careful folds, cut-outs and retro silhouettes.

The collection wasn't all dresses however, the Mulleavy sisters have been slowly integrating knitwear pieces this season there was a pretty pastel belted sweater, and they also created several pair of jacquard streamline trousers, each with a subtle print - perhaps more wearable on a casual basis. The dress designs may not be hugely practical, but they are fantastical, inspired and womanly, with a quirky twist that keeps you guessing until the end. As van Gogh's 'Starry Night' began to trickle down the runway piece by piece, there was a darker sophistication on offer - the Rodarte team have fairy-tale beauty cornered.
