Long before the creation of his instantly recognizable persona (the fingerless gloves, the ever-present sunglasses, the ponytail and the black Dior Homme suits) Karl Lagerfeld was, of course, designing clothes. The year? 1972 - with jet black hair and wearing a printed shirt and tight jeans, Karl is almost unrecognizable - save for that pout. In 1972, Karl was designing for French label ChloƩ (he began there in 1963, but only designing part of the collection at first) - he created a skirt for the Spring 1973 collection which he named the surprise skirt, commenting: "It seems that wearing these skirts is an extraordinary sensation." In the same year, he also began to work for Fendi.
