Tom Ford: "I'm Not Gay"

While appearing at the recent Vogue Festival, Tom Ford revealed that he doesn't think of himself as being gay. Vogue UK editor Alexandra Shulman commented that Ford often poses in his own campaigns with sexy female models despite always been comfortable about his sexuality and being “very open about being gay.”. Ford quipped back at Alexandra: “I’m not gay, Alex! What made you think that?” to which Alexandra nodded at Ford's long term partner Richard Buckley who was watching the event from the audience. Ford then explained:
“Yes, and he’s a man, but we don’t necessarily have to put boxes around everything. Have you ever slept with a woman, Alex?”
Alexandra laughed and responded with a "no" while the audience laughed on. Ford later added:
“I hate to use the words gay and straight, and I think we’re all on some sort of sliding scale. Of course, I’m at the Richard Buckley end of the scale, but I hate that gay/straight thing.”
Despite not wanting to "put boxes around everything" Ford has previously commented that he believes gay designers are better than straight designers. He once said to Interview magazine:
"That’s why I think gay men make better designers. I lust after beautiful women. First of all, I love women. But I lust after beautiful women in the way that I lust after a beautiful piece of sculpture—this will probably get me in trouble—or a beautiful car. I believe everyone’s on a sliding scale of sexuality. There are moments where I am sexually attracted to women. But it doesn’t overpower my first impulse."
