Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld is against celebrities wearing his Haute Couture designs on the red carpet because he believes they aren't made for such occasions, and it can even be bad for business. Karl commented that couture is:
“not a red-carpet opportunity…[w]e’ve had clients cancel an order after seeing their dress on a celebrity.”
The reason for this? Because Chanel clients are investing their money in one-of-a-kind Haute Couture designs that others don't have, so to see it on a celebrity can be a big turn off, especially if its someone who has simply availed of it for free. Karl believes couture is about exclusivity and seeing something on the red carpet makes it less so, even if it might also introduce a new customer or too.
