Designer duo Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been slowly carving out a label with its own strong identity for The Row. The Pre-Fall 2016 collection exhibits all of their strengths: oversized strong silhouettes inspired by a masculine tailored look, an emphasis on cut and minimal detailing: lines are clean and defined with little frill, but the attention has gone elsewhere: to the fall of a fabric, to the selection of the right kind of wool.
The Olsens know what they want to create: luxury that is not overridden with obviousness, pomp or pretension. The pieces have a simplicity that still shatters the mould with its ability to shake off the boredom that often comes with designs not being splashed in a print or overwrought with excessive stitches. There is something imaginative about how each garment is layered and pieced together - just the right oversized fit or material placed perfectly to drape with a flow that is both natural and still somehow surprising. It's the level of attention to detail - and knowing when to say enough is enough - that makes their designs awash with a freshness that only they have really mastered.
