Models are
essentially clotheshorses. They only wear the garments fashion houses design,
so they have no input into the creative process whatsoever. What they do have,
however, is a unique insight into the world of fashion. As a result, it is not
surprising that some well-known models have branched out and set up their own
labels and collections.
Launching a
fashion collection is easy if you are a famous name with the press hanging off
every word you say. People will buy your garments and model/celebrity friends
will wear them at red carpet events, thus guaranteeing you great publicity. It
is not quite so easy for up-and-coming models, but hiring a pop up retail space from Westfield Pop is one way to get your embryonic business off the ground. So which
models are known for their fashion collections as well as their ability to
saunter effortlessly down a catwalk?
Kendall and Kylie Jenner
The Jenner
sisters are probably the best-known young women on the planet. Kendall is an
established model, regularly walking for major designers at top Fashion Shows,
whilst Kylie spends much of her time posting photos on social media. When they
have the time, the girls also design products for their own fashion label: the Kendall + Kylie collection at Nordstrom.
Ivanka Trump
Ivanka
Trump, one-time model and star of Gossip Girl, is perhaps best known for being
the daughter of Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump, but she is also a fashion
designer in her own right. Ivanka models her own collection, as you might
expect given she is a model, and showcases the designs on her own website. Her
collection is also available from Nordstrom and selected branches of Zappos and
Lord and Taylor.
Alessandra Ambrosio
Alessandra
Ambrosio is a statuesque Brazilian model famous for her bronzed, laid-back
style and her collection is very much in the same vein. She has only recently
made the move from catwalk queen into fashion designer, but the Ale by
Alessandra collection is available under the Planet Blue brand.
Kate Moss
The bad
girl of fashion is well known for her out of hours partying and chaotic love
life, but she also has strong credentials as a fashion designer. Kate has been designing collections for the Topshop brand since 2007.
Her quirky style was very popular and although she took a break from designing
recently, she has returned to create another collection.
Lily Aldridge
Model Lily Aldridge has been designing her own capsule collections for Velvet
by Graham & Spencer. Her style so far is very easy to wear, with versatile
daywear including gorgeous knitwear and plaid shirts.
Sophie Dahl
Sophie
Dahl, the daughter of author Roald Dahl, was once a catwalk model for plus-size
clothing, but she is now an author and designer. In 2013, she designed a
collection for British label, Brora, which featured pieces Sophie thought
fitted well into her own wardrobe, including cashmere cardigans and pretty,
ultra-feminine tea dresses.
